چکیده

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployments are a rapidly growing segment in the Mobile/Cloud Era. Compared to traditional enterprise desktop deployments, VDI can reduce the total cost of ownership by as much as 50%. However, the cost of powering a VDI deployment is still a significant IT expense. Typically these deployments consist of a complex system of interconnected server, storage and networking components. Thus, it is challenging to minimize energy consumption of the entire system while at the same time satisfying performance requirements. In this work, we first derive an accurate VDI performance model and then propose a hierarchical heuristic to minimize energy consumption without violating performance constraints. We also demonstrate that such an approach reduces algorithmic complexity significantly. Results from hardware experiments show that in scenarios with low consolidation ratios energy savings range from 3% to 6%, while for high consolidation ratios they range from 11% to 25%. In all cases, the measured end-to-end performance penalty is minimal.

Title:BENCHMARKING IN VIRTUAL DESKTOPS FOR END-TO-END PERFORMANCE TRACEABILITY

There are proven benefits in terms of cost and convenience in delivering thin-client based virtual desktops, versus the use of traditional physical computers for end-user computing purposes. New cloud offerings such as "desktop-as-service" are rapidly being adopted among various communities, ranging from government agencies to research institutes and business entities. However, several challeng...

vCacheShare: Automated Server Flash Cache Space Management in a Virtualization Environment

Server Flash Cache (SFC) is increasingly adopted in virtualization environments for IO acceleration. Deciding the optimal SFC allocation among VMs or VM disks is a major pain-point, dominantly handled manually by administrators. In this paper, we present vCacheShare, a dynamic, workload-aware, policy-driven framework for continuous and automated optimization of SFC space partitioning. Its decis...

An Extension of Virtual Computing Laboratories: Scalable Virtual Desktop Infrastructure on Cloud Computing

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) based on virtual computing laboratories (VCL) model has been implemented in a small or medium scale on cloud computing in universities. Conventional physical computing laboratories with thousands of PCs are still widely used and co-exist with the VCL, however, the conventional PCs are not fully utilized in VCL. The demand of VDI is growing but the numbers of...
